Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority Hires Director of Finance
Glenn Dickerson Joins the BJCTA Staff

BIRMINGHAM, AL (February 12, 2019) – A native of Birmingham, Glenn Dickerson, joined the staff of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) Monday as its Director of Finance. Interim Executive Director Frank T. Martin welcomed Mr. Dickerson to the team as part of one of his immediate goals of steadying the authority during his tenure.

As a certified public accountant for 35 years, Mr. Dickerson says he bases his life and business principles on one word — integrity.  “Integrity embodies all the attributes that lead to success —excellence, honesty, service, charity, industry, fairness and teamwork,” said Dickerson.

The position of Director of Finance is responsible for the administration of all financial and statistical information related to the authority, required by federal, state and local regulation, as well as BJCTA policies and procedures.  Dickerson will work closely with all departments in the authority to ensure that budgetary planning and controls are in place and oversee the daily activities of the finance department.

During the February BJCTA Board of Directors meeting, Mr. Martin awarded employees in the finance department with certificates recognizing their commitment to the authority during the search for a permanent director.

Mr. Dickerson brings a wealth of public sector experience, in addition to time spent in the oil and gas industry.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Alabama State Board of Certified Public Accountants.

“We’re grateful to have Glenn joining our staff as we strive to be one of the best public transportation systems in the nation. A strong internal team leads to success in every aspect of our system and I believe Mr. Dickerson will be a welcomed addition throughout the authority as we move forward in a positive direction, for our riders, the community and our employees,” shared Interim Executive Director Martin.

The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority is the public transportation leader in Central Alabama.  The Authority averages three million riders per year with more than 300 employees.  For more information, visit www.maxtransit.org.

BJCTA Actively Working to Fill Personnel Vacancies

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (December 5, 2018) – The Birmingham-Jefferson Transit Authority is committed to providing our riders with the best possible service, our partners with the best value in public transportation and our employees with a stable and fulfilling work environment.  It is true that the BJCTA has experienced personnel issues in the last few weeks, but the board is taking the necessary steps to stabilize the organization for our partners, staff and the riders who rely on MAX.  Our first action is finalizing the details necessary to hire Frank Martin as interim executive director, which was voted on and approved by the board today.  He has more than 40 years of transit experience, including time at the BJCTA.  Mr. Martin has committed to spend four to six months at the organization, allowing the board to conduct a thorough and extensive search for the right candidate to fill the role of executive director.  We are also actively looking for a new chief financial officer.  Until that role is filled, we have a qualified consultant in to ensure the responsibilities of the finance department are handled in a timely and efficient manner.  The board approved a motion to engage with Warren Averitt to conduct a thorough financial assessment designed to perform a comprehensive review of the organization’s operational areas. The BJCTA Board is determined to provide a transit agency that will take Birmingham into the future and having the right people in place is critical to our success.

BJCTA Donates MAX Bus to Lawson State Community College
Transit authority helps further hands-on experience for students enrolled
in Lawson State Community College’s diesel mechanic program with donation.

Birmingham, AL (November 9, 2018) – Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) is pleased to announce the donation of a MAX bus to Lawson State Community College. The donation of the decommissioned bus will benefit the college’s Alabama Center for Automotive Excellence (ACAE) program. The program is offered to those interested in working as mechanical technicians in the transportation service.

“Giving students hands-on experience through the donation of one of our buses showcases the commitment of the BJCTA to the citizens of Birmingham.  To their educational opportunities and economic prosperity. The necessary training for future diesel mechanic is invaluable, particularly for the transit authority. We look forward to seeing graduates of this program working with MAX in the near future,” shared Christopher Ruffin, Interim Executive Director of the BJCTA.

BJCTA recognizes the increasing demand for diesel mechanics in the transportation industry and the increasing need for trained mechanics to keep MAX buses on the roads.

“Between 2016 and 2026, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in the automotive service industry will expand 6 percent, which will result in 47,600 new jobs. Job placement for the program is 100%. We hope to prepare our students for a successful career in this industry and thank the BJCTA for their efforts in furthering that education,” says Dr. Perry W. Ward, Lawson State Community College president.

The keys were passed from Interim Executive Director Ruffin to Lawson State Community College President on Friday, November 9th at the Intermodal Facility Bus Terminal where the bus will be transferred to the campus.

An audit completed earlier this year proved an unqualified opinion, despite allegations made against BJCTA, which means that an independent auditor’s judgment confirmed the organization’s financial statements were fairly and appropriately presented. The city of Vestavia Hills did receive an incorrect invoice which was provided by a former employee. A new and corrected invoice has since been submitted to the city manager. BJCTA is committed to providing accurate billing to all of our partnering cities.
