The Grants Department protects federal funds and looks for funding opportunities that help Birmingham - Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) provide excellent transportation and improve infrastructure across Birmingham. We handle grants from start to finish—from applying to completing projects—making sure we follow all rules, report accurately, and reach our goals. We also work with department heads to increase Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) participation in grant projects. We monitor subrecipients and make sure everyone follows financial reporting guidelines from different funding sources, keeping all grant work accurate and on time.
BJCTA gets various federal grants that are important for maintaining and improving our public transportation services. These funding programs support key areas like fleet maintenance, buying equipment, improving facilities, and expanding our infrastructure. Here are the main grant programs we use:
This includes individuals with specific impairment-related conditions that prevent them from traveling to boarding locations or from disembarking locations.
This funding is used for vehicle upgrades, improvements to our maintenance facility, and building new facilities to support BJCTA's growth and better service.
The Program of Projects (POP) shows how Federal Transit Administration (FTA) formula funds are divided within the Birmingham-Jefferson County area and lists the projects funded through these allocations. The main FTA formula funds used by BJCTA include the Section 5307 Urbanized Area Formula Program and the Section 5339 Bus and Bus Facilities Program.
The POP works with the Regional Planning Commission’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), which shows how federal transportation funds are programmed across the region. While the TIP gives an overview of funding amounts for these FTA formula funds, the POP gives detailed information on specific projects funded by BJCTA.
As the Designated Recipient for the Birmingham urbanized area’s FTA formula fund allocations, BJCTA is responsible for creating and managing the POP information to make sure these funds are used effectively on our projects.
BJCTA invites public feedback on our Program of Projects (POP) to ensure our transit initiatives meet community needs.
