BIRMINGHAM-JEFFERSON COUNTY TRANSIT AUTHORITY LAUNCHES MAX-DIRECT
AT PRESS CONFERENCE ON NOVEMBER 1, 2019

Innovative On-Demand Ride Share Service For Mountain Brook Customers

Birmingham, AL (October 31, 2019) – The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) announces the launch of MAX-DIRECT, a flexible and dynamic on-demand microtransit shuttle which will service riders to Mountain Brook.  The new service, available beginning Monday, November 4, 2019, will replace two fixed routes, Route 502 Cherokee Bend and 504 Hermitage.

Similar to a ride-hailing service, MAX-DIRECT uses a smartphone App for riders to schedule customized curb-to-curb microtransit trips. A smaller, neighborhood-friendly shuttle bus will pick up riders at Central Station and drop them off at a requested address.  It will also pick passengers up at their destination within the coverage area and deliver them to Central Station.  The new service canalso accommodate passengers with disabilities.

A press conference to announce additional details and an App tutorial will be held on November 1, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at BJCTA Central Station, 1735 Morris Avenue, Birmingham, AL.

“We are always looking for ways to ensure that our service meets the needs of our customers.  We at BJCTA believe that the MAX-DIRECT service will help accomplish that,” said Frank T. Martin, Executive Director/CEO of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority.  “By simplydownloading the TransLoc App, they will have the ability to request a ride, obtain an estimated pick up time and track their bus in real time.”

BJCTA recognizes that not all customers have access to a smart phone, making usage of the App an impossibility.  For those customers, requests for rides will be accepted online at www.ondemand.transloc.com or by calling 205-521-0101, #5.  Wait times for service are subject to vehicle availability and demand.

As technology evolves and transit offerings expand, the BJCTA continues to search for innovative ways to address accessibility and customer mobility.  This new service offers a complement to existing fixed route bus service by providing a curb to curb service that is more direct.

New Farmers Market to Open at BJCTA Central Station on October 30th

Birmingham, AL (October 16, 2019) – The new Birmingham Central Market, which will be located at 1600 Morris Avenue and adjacent to the MAX Central Station, will open Wednesday, October 30, 2019 with an 11 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony. Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority Executive Director Frank T. Martin will join Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, city councilors, community members and social service organizations for the grand opening.

Fresh vegetables, fruit, eggs and honey will be sold to the public Monday through Friday, 12:30 – 5:30 p.m. Five farmers are currently confirmed to sell at the market, which will accept SNAP/EBT.

The market is a result of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority and the City of Birmingham uniting to address the city’s food deserts. Almost 70% of Birmingham residents live in areas the United States Department of Agriculture has designated as food deserts, which are defined as an urban area where it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. The new market will aid in providing fresh produce to residents using the MAX system and traveling through downtown Birmingham.

The City of Birmingham received an initial grant of $50,000 from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to start the Central Market. The City of Birmingham contributed an additional $100,000, the BJCTA provided $50,000 towards construction and $43,000 in-kind donations were given to move the Central Market from an idea to a reality. Hundreds of people use MAX daily, making the downtown hub an ideal location for the farmers market.

“Our hope is that by opening the Central Market at the MAX Central Station, Birmingham residents will find it easier to access the fresh food they need for themselves and their families,” said Mayor Woodfin. “But this market isn’t just for MAX riders, it is for the entire city.  We know that if barriers are removed to make it easier to access fresh and affordable food, we will have a healthier community.”

Organizers hope the market is just the beginning of seeing lives and people’s health improved.

“We are concerned about the lives of our customers and are thrilled to be able to offer them this service,” said Martin. “The Central Market has the possibility to make a real difference in the health of the entire community.”

New Buses Join Fleet of Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority

Birmingham, AL (September 30, 2019) – The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) today added 11 new fixed route buses to their fleet. The new 35-foot buses run on carbon natural gas (CNG) that minimizes harmful carbon deposits to the environment, which leads to a cleaner and more efficient engine.

Six of the 11 buses were purchased from a $3.6 million competitive low emission, no emission award received by BJCTA in early 2016. The other five were purchased from existing Section 5339 (Bus and Bus Facilities) and Section 5307 (Preventative Maintenance) grant awards that were apportioned to BJCTA in 2018 and 2019 based on ridership data. All the new buses will be used to replace old fleet that have met their useful life. The useful life of these vehicles is 12 years or 500,000 miles. The average age of BJCTA’s fleet is approximately 6 years old.

“The BJCTA is always looking for ways to improve the quality our fleet with the goal of enhancing our customers experience.” said Frank T. Martin, BJCTA Executive Director. “These new buses have a higher curb switch which assist riders in wheelchairs or those needing assistance entering or exiting the bus. They are also equipped with improved WIFI, 19-inch displays monitors, and other upgraded features.”

The new buses officially join the BJCTA fleet today.

BIRMINGHAM-JEFFERSON COUNTY TRANSIT AUTHORITY PROPOSES TO MODIFY ROUTES

Changes Based on City of Birmingham Budget/Funding

Birmingham, AL (August 1, 2019) – The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) announced a route modification proposal and proposed fare increase based on the City of Birmingham’s recently approved budget.  The city’s allotment to BJCTA of $10 million falls significantly short of close to $16 million required to operate the current routes that serve the city.  For at least three consecutive years, BJCTA has provided services to Birmingham in excess of the level funded by the City.

“Unfortunately, this decision was out of our hands,” said Frank T. Martin, interim executive director of the BJCTA.  “This is not a scenario anyone at the BJCTA wanted to implement, but we cannot continue to provide service that is not being paid for.”

The proposed route modifications and proposed fare increases will go into effect September 23, 2019. Many of the changes involve combining low ridership routes to make them more efficient, rescheduling, rerouting and in some cases, eliminating those not financially feasible. In addition, many of the newly modified routes will cease service at 7:00 p.m., except for routes 25, 26 and 28.

BJCTA is hosting 14 public information meetings beginning on August 5, 2019 through August 16, 2019 at various locations throughout Birmingham.  Details about these meetings and the specifics about the prospective modifications are attached or can be found on the agency’s website located at www.maxtransit.org.

“A thriving transportation system is critical to a growing city,” continued Martin.  “It is necessary to move our citizens to employment, healthcare, education and shopping options.  New residents and businesses consider public transportation when making decisions about relocation and the BJCTA wants to provide a robust and dependable system.  We understand that these current modifications will negatively impact the lives of some of our riders and we are doing all we can to minimize the effects.”

Birmingham, Ala. (July 1, 2019) – As the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority continues to make changes designed to increase ridership and engage the public, they are announcing the next step in that effort as they launch their new website.   Many new features including service alerts on the homepage and easier navigation allowing customers to plan trips are just a few of the upgrades from the previous site.

Information about each department, the board of directors and contact information for each including all necessary forms for feedback, public record requests, lost and found and additional forms for customers are available on the enhanced site as well.

Improved access to rider tools is one of the key features that makes the new website a great instrument for MAX customers.

BEST MAX BUS DRIVER ANNOUNCED AT OTHER AWARDS

Birmingham Voted Online and during National Get On Board Day

Birmingham, AL (May 15, 2019). – Winners of The Other Awards were announced last night, including Best MAX Bus Driver, Ms. Nioka (CoCo) Boyce.  The Other Awards were created to honor those in our community who are often the unsung hero, those doing great things but receiving no recognition.

The awards were based on online nominations and votes cast by riders at MAX’s Central Station on National Get On Board Day.  Other categories included Birmingham Cheerleader, Favorite Birmingham City School Teacher, Funniest Person and Favorite Service Industry Worker (barista, bus boy, server, kitchen staff, bartender, etc.)

“We aren’t surprised that our riders chose Ms. Boyce,” said XXX.  “People always stop her when she is walking through Central Station with a friendly greeting and it is obvious she is very well liked and respected.”

Ms. Boyce has been driving for the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority for almost three and a half years.  She is currently driving buses on a range of routes including the #12, #18, #25, #26 and the 280 route.

“My philosophy has always been that doing what’s right is right, just not always easy,” Ms. Boyce offered.  “It is important to me that I try to notice things about people as individuals, find a way to encourage or lift them up.  Our drivers are the face of the BJCTA, the first and last person a rider sees when they ride our buses.  We have the ability to genuinely impact their day and I take that seriously.”

BIRMINGHAM-JEFFERSON COUNTY TRANSIT AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES

SUCCESSFUL NATIONAL GET ON BOARD DAY

Birmingham, AL (April 30, 2019) – Last Thursday, April 25th, transit systems across the country, including the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority, celebrated “National Get On Board Day.” The day is set aside by the American Public Transportation Association to commemorate the value and benefit of public transportation to communities.

To encourage new riders to use public transit through the MAX system and to thank current riders, all fares were waived on April 25th.  This led to an increase of 7.6% in BJCTA riders.  “We suffered a very rainy afternoon on Thursday, and we believe based on data from other rainy days in the month of April, that if it had been sunny, our ridership would have risen more than 10% percent”, said Frank T. Martin, Interim Executive Director at BJCTA.

In addition to the free fares, a celebration was held at BJCTA Central Station with music, free food and prizes.

“We are thrilled that so many people chose National Get On Board Day as a time to give public transportation a try,” said Martin.  “There are so many advantages for utilizing public transportation, to both the community at large and the individual.  It stimulates economic development, saves money for the rider and is a greener option for transportation.  A healthy public transportation system is part and parcel for a thriving community.”

For every dollar invested in public transportation, it generates four dollars in economic return.  Communities with a healthy public transportation system reduce the nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually and save the United States 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually.

The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority is the public transportation leader in Central Alabama.  The Authority averages three million riders per year with more than 300 employees.  For more information, visit www.maxtransit.org.
