BJCTA MAX Transit Awarded $25 Million Federal Grant to Modernize Public Transit in Birmingham
The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) is proud to announce that MAX Transit has been awarded a $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the construction of a new maintenance and operations facility.
This grant will be pivotal in driving the next level of transit improvements, including the development of an innovative, modern Operations and Maintenance Facility for services in Birmingham-Jefferson County. With these funds, BJCTA will incorporate advanced technologies and cleaner energy solutions into our operations and fleet supporting compressed natural gas vehicles and establishing new infrastructure for electric vehicles. These advancements align with BJCTA’s commitment to environmental sustainability, reducing emissions, and building a resilient, future-ready transportation system. The new facility will serve as a cornerstone of these efforts.
“We’re grateful for this grant, which advances our five-year Strategic Plan by supporting fleet modernization, operational improvements, and innovative solutions,” said BJCTA CEO & Executive Director, Charlotte Shaw.
“We appreciate the Administration’s recognition of the critical role a reliable and efficient transportation system plays in connecting Americans to opportunity. BJCTA is proud to contribute to building a more advanced and accessible transit network. We extend our sincere thanks to Representative Terri Sewell and Senator Katie Britt for their strong advocacy and partnership. This investment reflects the ongoing collaboration between local and federal partners committed to strengthening public transportation in our region.”
