Bus Mechanic Technician

JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the Mechanic performs skilled maintenance on the BJCTA transit fleet, including but not limited to light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles. This role is responsible for diagnosing mechanical issues, conducting preventive maintenance, completing repairs in accordance with safety and regulatory standards, and ensuring vehicles remain in optimal operating condition to support reliable transit service.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Perform Preventive Maintenance Inspections
· Diagnose, troubleshoot and perform both minor and major repairs on all company vehicles and equipment.
· Remove and replace all units and rebuild components.
· Make service (road) calls.
· Complete all required documents.
· Account for all materials used in accordance with work order system.
· Must be able to safely operate vehicles or maintenance
· Must be available for any shift, including nights and/or weekends.
· Ability to work closely with other employees and vendors.
· Must have complete set of hand tools to perform duties of the position.
· Work on diesel and gas engines, suspension, brakes, and drive trains.
· Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
· Ability to complete an assigned task in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness.
· Must read chemical labels and follow safe handling procedures.
· Must understand and follow all safety rules.
· Must be able to work in a cooperative manner with co-workers and supervisors.
· Perform other duties similar in nature and level as assigned.
· Must attend mandatory meetings, as required

SKILLS & ABILITIES
· Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain gasoline, diesel, and/or CNG-powered transit buses.
· Ability to perform preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and complete required adjustments or repairs.
· Ability to use diagnostic tools, including scan tools, multimeters, and manufacturer-specific software.
· Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and work orders.
· Ability to perform mechanical work on engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, HVAC systems, suspensions, and steering components.
· Ability to safely operate power tools, hand tools, lifts, jacks, and shop equipment.
· Ability to perform road calls and make safe, temporary repairs when buses are disabled in service.
· Ability to operate a commercial vehicle and move buses within the yard or garage.
· Ability to complete accurate documentation in maintenance software systems (e.g., work orders, parts usage, inspection sheets).
· Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize work assignments, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced maintenance environment.
· Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, parts staff, and fellow mechanics.
· Ability to work independently or as part of a maintenance team.
· Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull heavy components and work in awkward positions (under vehicles, on top of buses, etc.).
· Willingness and ability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
· Ability to maintain a clean and safe workspace and comply with all shop safety rules.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
Follow the work practices and standard operating procedures for this position. Use and/or wear the appropriate equipment, protective devices or clothing that BJCTA requires. Report health and safety concerns related to performing the duties of your job to supervisors and report any on-going/unresolved health and safety concerns to the Administration Department or safety representatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION
High school diploma or GED required and four years of experience in previous automotive, diesel/gas, or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance.
Completion of a vocational, technical, or trade school program in automotive or diesel technology may substitute for experience. Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and hands-on mechanical experience that provides the required knowledge and skills may be considered.

PREFFERED
Experience working in a transit, fleet, or heavy-equipment maintenance environment.
Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write and understand instructions.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals as needed.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use of hands and fingers, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
