Valerie Rivers Joins the BJCTA Staff

Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority Names Chief of Staff
BIRMINGHAM, AL (February 14, 2019) – The Chief of Staff position at the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority has been filled by Valerie Rivers. The newest member of the authority’s executive team, Ms. Rivers’ career has been dedicated to public service, in Birmingham and other cities.
Most recently she was the Deputy Executive Director/Logistics for the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, she has also served in the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department and the Health and Human Services Department, she was the Executive Director of the Houston Downtown Redevelopment Authority/Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #3. In Richmond, VA she was the Director of the Minority Business Development Department. Ms. Rivers is a native of Birmingham. She graduated from Holy Family High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Tuskegee Institute and a Juris Doctorate from Southern University. Before leaving Birmingham in the 90’s she served as the City Council Administrator for the Birmingham City Council and as the City Clerk/Treasurer for the City of Fairfield, AL. “I am looking forward to being back home and working with the transit authority to enhance the quality of life of the citizens we serve” said Rivers. In the position of Chief of Staff, Rivers will participate in planning, developing and organizing the activities of the authority. She will also lead staff and participate in special projects of strategic importance to the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority. In addition to her vast professional experience, Ms. Rivers is active in many professional organizations that include the National Forum of Black Public Administrators, International City/County Management Association, National Association of Minority Contractors, Association of Conflict Resolution, Airport Minority Advisory Council and the American Contract Compliance Association. “The Chief of Staff position is critical to smooth daily operations,” said Frank Martin, Interim Executive Director of the BJCTA. Valerie is going to be an invaluable asset to both the BJCTA and to the Birmingham and Jefferson County region.” The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority is the public transportation leader in Central Alabama.
