The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) in partnership with the City of Birmingham, and the Birmingham Farmers Market has been awarded the Healthy Food Financing grant. Funded through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), this grant will provide quality food to underserved communities in the Birmingham area.

The amount awarded through ADECA is $50,000.00. The City of Birmingham will match that amount and BJCTA will contribute $43,000.00. The complete project totals $143,000.00. The Birmingham Farmers Market will provide fresh fruits and vegetables for the project.

BJCTA competed against 19 other agencies for this opportunity. They were one of five finalists selected ultimately leading them to win the award. This is the first time the state of Alabama has received funding for this initiative.

The Farmer’s Market will be located on property near the Birmingham Intermodal Facility on the block of Morris Avenue and 16th Street North.
“We understand how important this service is to the Fairfield community. We are excited to get the buses rolling once again,” BJCTA Executive Director Barbara Murdock.
The project is expected to be complete this summer.
